With expenses and income that may fluctuate from assignment to assignment its critical to make the most of your money and meet your savings goals. But at the same time, you still want to enjoy all the exciting places that your travel job takes you. So what can you do? Here are a few tips:
Food can become a major expense before you know it, especially when going out for dinner or ordering in. So it’s best to cook at home as much as possible. To curb eating out consider taking your lunch to work, setting a goal to eat a nice dinner out once a week or twice a month, brewing you’re on coffee instead of stopping by a coffee house, and taking water and snacks with you wherever you go.
Then make the most of planning ahead and your freezer space. Shop the sales at grocery stores on high dollar items you enjoy and stock up using your freezer. Then double up on recipes when cooking and freeze extra servings to use later. Before you know it you’ll be enjoying plenty of home cooked meals. Plus, you will be eating a lot healthier with less salt and fat than you find in restaurant meals.
Have a long commute to work? If that’s the case, then gas and wear and tear on your car can really add up. Consider low-cost public transportation such as a city bus or light rail. You’ll be able to get to work at a fraction of the cost. Plus, you can enjoy a little down time reading a book or listening to your favorite music. Public transportation is also a great way to make your sightseeing more economical, too.
No one wants to cut back on having fun. You can still have fun for less it’s just a matter of doing a little extra planning and changing your mindset. What do I mean? Well for one thing there are a lot of things you can do for free that are a load of fun. For example, many museums offer a free night each month. Or you can take a drive or bike ride through a national forest. Or have a picnic in a park and conduct your own walking tour of your new city.
Those are all fun things to do and cost absolutely nothing.
For other entertainment, with a little planning and a great tool like Groupon you can enjoy the best of attractions at a screaming deal. Get a massage, go to the movies, eat at a fabulous restaurant or visit a theme park all at a discount. Now that’s fun.
